Herons beat Lanier County varsity, fall in JV action

LAKELAND — It was a typical spring game filled with correctable mistakes here at Roquemore Stadium Friday night on the Lanier County High School campus.

Brantley County won the three-quarter varsity matchup 14-12 with the Bulldogs capturing the fourth quarter jayvee scrimmage 7-0.

“It was nice to see our kids use what they have been coached to do, respond to in-game adjustments, and take coaching on a Friday night,” said Brantley County head coach Geoff Cannon. “It was a lot of fun, a lot of fun.”

The Herons had some highs on each side of the ball. There was a 77-yard catch-and-run from quarterback Kellon Middleton (3-of-11, 93 yards) to wide receiver Brian Hiott for the first points of the night in the second quarter. Middleton (10 carries, 36 yards) followed with a 30- yard score two plays later.

“I felt like we were slow starters tonight and I would like that not to be who we are,” said Cannon of the eight-yard first quarter production. “We don’t have to be fast starters, but we can’t be slow starters.”
