Brantley County commissioners got their first look at the 2023 budget during a called meeting Thursday afternoon.

Interim County Manager Chuck Scragg presented the $13,234,882 proposed budget during the June 28, 2 p.m. meeting. The new budget is $1,017,332 more than last year’s $12,217,550 ledger.

Scragg explained some of the rise was because of four percent raises across the board for county employees, which will kick in January 1, 2023. Employees received a two percent raise July 1. Another was the cost of fuel for departments with gasoline well over four dollars and diesel reaching towards $6.

Scragg, along with county department heads, worked together in putting together the new budget.

The called budget meeting Thursday, June 28 was the first of three scheduled. A Public Hearing for the budget is scheduled for Thursday, July 14 ahead of the regular monthly meeting’s starting time of 6 p.m. The budget is expected to be adopted Thursday, July 28.

The setting of the millage rate is scheduled for the last meeting.
